There is a reason why Oscar Mortens is often called the “Canine Soul-Catcher” of the mid-century era. This petite Chihuahua figurine, part of the coveted Royal Design line, perfectly captures that quintessential “apple-head” inquisitive tilt that Chihuahua lovers know so well.
While many Mortens Studio pieces lost their paper labels decades ago, this survivor boasts both its original gold foil hip label and the circular copyright stamp on the base. It’s a remarkable find for the serious collector who values documented authenticity.
Sculpted in Chicago during the 1940s, the piece features the studio’s signature “Durostone” ceramic-over-wire technique. The warm tan glaze and alert, hand-painted eyes give it a lifelike presence that modern mass-produced figurines simply can’t replicate.
Measuring 3 1/2″ tall x 3 3/4″ long x 2″ wide, it is in excellent vintage condition. One tiny, negligible nick is present on the tip of the right ear (see photos), which does not detract from the beauty of this sweet dog.
Finished in a warm, glossy tan glaze with hand-painted details on the face and paws, it is a sophisticated addition to any “A Dog’s Tale” collection or a thoughtful gift for the Chihuahua enthusiast who appreciates the history of American giftware.
