This intriguing artwork was created with a collection of ten vintage cigarette cards that were part of a Dog series, circa 1930. Each card is cut and matted to show both sides, the dog’s picture on one side, and the description of the breed on the other. Within the beautiful cherry wood frame, there are two pieces of glass, one covering the front of the artwork, and the other covering the back to protect the text and descriptions of the dogs. The ten dogs displayed are: the Harrier (similar to a Foxhound), the Mastiff, the Newfoundland, the Papillon, the Pointer, the Clumber Spaniel, the Airedale, the Bedlington Terrier, the Kerry Blue Terrier, and the Sealyham Terrier. The entire, framed piece is 11 3/4″ tall x 9 3/4″ wide, and it is in great condition. There are some water marks on the back of the matte, but they do not seem to have touched the cigarette cards. Cigarette cards started in the mid-to-late 19th century. They were initially blank cards, used to add strength to cigarette packs. A few years later, you could find them printed with advertising details, and by the early 1900’s, many were produced bearing pictures. The cards were then organized in series of the same subjects, with usually 50 cards in a series that were designed to be collected as a marketing gimmick to entice people to buy cigarettes. For dog enthusiasts, this beautifully created, framed artwork captures the spirit of some of the most popular dog breeds of that era.
