Can we “Fetch” a classic Pug
or perhaps another new friend for your consideration?
This wonderful, Victorian silverplate humidor dates back to the late 1800’s. It was designed and manufactured by the Derby Silver Company of Derby, CT. It is well-marked on the underside with this manufacturer’s trademark, as well as the patent date and number, and the specification of “Quadruple Plate.” This exquisite humidor is decorated with ornate repousse silver work and features a highly-detailed figural Pug dog with glass eyes, sitting with one paw raised. The humidor is split into two sections. One section was used to hold a dampened sponge, and the other, larger compartment was used to hold tobacco. The smaller side is secured with two ball-topped screws, and the larger side is hinged and opens with a lift of its handle. This gorgeous piece has a very Art Nouveau look to it, and it was most likely designed for a woman. It is 6 1/4″ tall x 6″ long x 51/4″ wide. It is in excellent condition for it’s age. The silverplate appears to be completely intact on the exterior, with some wear only on the inside. Collectors of Victorian silver, dogs, Pugs or tobacciana would all treasure this humidor. It is also an elegant piece to re-purpose as a jewelry or trinket box.
