Definition:Royal Doulton

Royal Doulton dog figurines are the benchmark of British ceramic dog collectibles. The Stoke-on-Trent firm — originally established in Lambeth, London in 1815 — produced dog figurines from the early 20th century, with the golden era for canine models spanning the 1920s through the 1960s. Their HN series figurines, modeled by sculptors including the legendary Frederick Daws, are prized for painterly realism — particularly the careful rendering of coat patterns in brindle, fawn, and pied. Royal Doulton dogs are identified by their HN model numbers and the evolving backstamp series; the presence of specific marks helps date production to within a decade. Royal Doulton acquired Beswick in 1969 and continued producing many former Beswick dog models. Condition is paramount: chips, restoration, or color fading substantially reduce value on these prestigious pieces.
