This fabulous antique inkwell features a highly-detailed setter’s head, attached firmly to the center of an ornate pen tray, supported by four “paw foot” legs. The dog’s head looks amazingly lifelike with glass eyes and a bit of a “goofy” expression due to one side of it’s lower lip designed to droop slightly (not unlike it’s flesh and fur counterparts!). The head flips back to reveal the inkwell. The inkwell has a clear glass, removable insert.
The dog’s head sits on a paw-footed silver plate pen tray that is beautifully decorated with delicately etched leaves and scrolls. It is well marked on the underside of the tray, showing the designer, R. Richardson, the maker, Cornwall Works, and place of origin, Sheffield, England.
This is a heavy and substantial piece in excellent condition. Certainly a “must-have” for any antique inkwell collector, but also a wonderful piece to grace the classic home or office of someone who has and loves dogs.
