This wonderful Murano Glass dog is so colorful and fascinating, you could look at it forever. It was created using the Millefiori technique, which involves creating glass canes or rods, known as murine , with multicolored patterns which are viewable only from the cut ends of the cane. These murrine rods are heated in a furnace, pulled until thin while still maintaining the cross section’s design, and then cut into beads or discs when cooled. These discs are then placed in molds, reheated and then pressed to come together without gaps to create the intended figurine. (Please note that this is a real simple description of a painstaking process that is much more involved, and requires a tremendous amount of skill.)
Millefiori, also known as Murrine, means “a thousand flowers” in Italian, and you can certainly see why.
It is one of the best-known and highly sought after techniques of Murano glass making.
This sweet pup is 3 3/4″ tall x 2 1/2″ long x 1 1/4″ wide, and it is in excellent condition.
