This Mortens Studio English Setter Dog is seated and calmly watching the world go by.
Oscar Morten immigrated from Sweden to the U.S. and opened a giftware studio in 1931 in Chicago. Over the next 32 years, he created over 300 popular dog and horse models. Composed of ceramic over a metal skeleton, these figurines, although beautifully engaging, were prone to crazing and flaking, thus making it difficult, today, to find examples in perfect condition.
This elegant English Setter dog figurine is in excellent condition with a small chip on the underside of her front paw, that cannot be seen unless you turn her over.
She is also a wonderful example of this designer’s art on one of his larger figurines.
She measures a full 5″ tall x 4 1/2″ long x 4″ wide.
Beautiful detailing and soft, subtle colors of cream, black and gray, make this sporting dog a treasure for collectors, or the perfect canine “friend” to grace your fireplace mantel, or desk.
She is listed on page 41 of “The Mortens Studio Royal Designs for The Lover of Dogs, Horses, and Wild Animals” by John Cox. There were three English Setters created by Mortens Studio as part of “The Royal Designs” series. One is standing, another is lying down and this one, which is sitting.
Please note that we currently have two of the three in stock. Take a look at the last picture to see how wonderful they display together.
