Rare Antique Conta & Boehme Porcelain Dog & Puppies Figural Inkwell – Circa Early 1900s

An extraordinary antique Conta & Boehme porcelain figural inkwell, produced in Poessneck, Germany, circa early 1900s.

Measuring 6 1/2″ tall by 7 1/2″ long by 7″ wide, this rare piece tells the wonderfully whimsical story of a mother dog seated atop a table, watching her three rambunctious puppies pulling at the tablecloth in their attempt to get at the bones and dog dish on the tabletop.

Reminiscent of the smaller Victorian “Fairings” made by Conta & Boehme, this elaborate piece combines matte porcelain (the fence and grassy terrain) with glazed porcelain (the dogs, table, and floral tablecloth).

It features its original working hinges that open smoothly to reveal the original porcelain inkpot insert, which has a small chip along its upper rim that is completely hidden when closed for display.

Impressed on the lower inside rim with mold numbers “40”, “15”, and “8”, the main body and dog figures are in immaculate antique condition with no chips, cracks, or restorations.
