This folk art portrait of a Saint Bernard dog was most likely tucked in a far corner of Clarence Winne’s art studio. Winne, a popular artist for Coll.ier’s Magazine, produced this dog portrait around 1936.
Done in pastels on board, it measures 12 1/2″ tall x 11 1/2″ wide. It is framed under glass in a dark brown wood frame, that has a few minor chips and a few splatters of white paint on it.
The portrait is in excellent condition, and it has a simple, tender appeal. Those who have had the honor of having a Saint Bernard as a friend, knows all about their simple, but enormously engaging personalities.
This wonderful work of art was “rescued” from Clarence Winne’s son’s estate.
