Set of 5 Prinknash Abbey “Bewick’s Houndes” Dog Plates

Celebrate the heritage of British sporting dogs with this complete set of five fine pottery plates from Prinknash Abbey. Designed by Clifford Richards, the “Bewick’s Houndes” series serves as a sophisticated tribute to the 1789 wood-engravings of Thomas Bewick, the father of modern wood engraving.

Each plate features a distinct breed study—including the Mastiff, Newfoundland, and the “Dalmation or Coach Dog”—rendered in crisp black transfer on a creamy ground. The central illustrations are framed by an exceptionally detailed border inspired by a lavish 18th-century dog collar, accented with delicate gilding.

Each plate is 8 1/2” in diameter., and the entire set is in excellent condition.

Exquisite in their historical detail, these plates are a rare find as a set. They offer a bold, graphic presence that would anchor a library gallery wall or add a scholarly touch to a traditional dining room.
