Add a soulful touch of American craftsmanship to your collection with this substantial hand-carved scent hound. Expertly whittled from a single, dense block of solid wood, this piece captures a Hound dog gazing intently upwards towards his human best friend.
This sculpture is a quintessential example of 20th-century American Folk Art. It features a hand-incised artist’s mark on the underside (a stylized “M“), a hallmark of independent whittlers who specialized in capturing the personality of working breeds.
Unlike lightweight decorative carvings, this piece weighs a substantial 2 lbs, suggesting it was carved from a slow-growth hardwood such as Ironwood or Cherry. The artisan used deep, rhythmic gouge marks to define the hound’s powerful haunches and long, drooping ears, while the visible grain follows the natural contour of the dog’s form, creating a beautiful organic patina that only comes with age.
