Can we “Fetch” a classic Retriever
or perhaps another new friend for your consideration?
Rare and so charming, this Salt Glazed Pottery Jar is embellished with a Retriever dog, sporting a fancy collar. It measures 6 1/2″ tall x 5 3/4″ in diameter. This wonderful jar is stoneware with a glossy, translucent glaze that also has a slightly orange-peel-like texture. This process of “salt glazing” began in Germany in the 1400’s and became popular in England and colonial America in the 1700’s. It was done by throwing common salt into the kiln during the firing process. The colorless glaze could be colored brown by adding iron oxide, purple, by adding manganese oxide, or in this case, blue, by adding cobalt oxide. Salt glazing was forced to cease in 1983, due to environmental restrictions.
This is a White’s Utica pottery jar, made in New York State in the 1860’s. It is in great condition with some slight darkening at the top from age. It is an amazing find for any vintage pottery collector, and the wonderful dog that graces the front of this piece, is a special bonus for all of us who are canine enthusiasts!
