This wonderful, antique bronze Airedale dog was created by Paul Herzel (1876-1956), for the Pompeian Bronze Company of New York City, in the early 1920’s. An old Pompeian Bronze Company catalog lists him as #164 AIREDALE. This charming dog measures 6 3/4″ high and sits on a “6 1/4″ long x 2” wide base. He is signed on the base of the sculpture, and numbered on the rectangular base.

Originally designed as a bookend, he is quite rare, rated 5* in Collectors Encyclopedia of Bookends. This dog looks to be in that wonderful stage between being a puppy and being an adult dog. His features have a gentle happiness to them, that is really quite contagious. He is in excellent antique condition.
