This wonderful, antique fire screen was used during the 19th century to create some separation between ladies sitting in the parlor, and the heat from the fireplace. This very special one consists of wood carved frame, attached to a beautifully turned stem, set on three legs. The frame surrounds a splendid needlepoint panel, depicting one standing adult dog, one reclining adult dog, and a small puppy. While the standing dog looks out into the distance and appears to be protecting the other two, the reclining mother dog goes nose- to -nose with her puppy in such a loving way, it absolutely melts your heart. This needlepoint portrait is exquisitely done and it is in excellent condition, framed under glass. Please excuse what looks like cloudiness on the needlepoint. It is the reflection of the photographer caused by the light and captured by the camera.
The piece is backed in a patterned silk fabric. The entire piece stands a full 53 inches and the base is 14 inches diagonally. The needlepoint is 18″ tall x 19 1/4″ long, including the frame. The frame, stem and base are in good condition with a chip on the left top rosette of the frame (see picture), some discoloration and tearing of the fabric on the back, and a small scrape on one leg of the base.
Finding such a unique piece with such an extraordinary and sentimental portrait of a family of dogs, just sets our hearts a flutter! Whether you decide to restore it, or leave it as you see it, it will add a touch of timeless elegance to either a formal room, or a more casual room dedicated to relaxation and the enjoyment of being with family.
