Immerse yourself in the grandeur of the Russian Imperial Court with this exceptionally rare complete portfolio of Borzoi dog lithographs. Published in 1934 in a limited edition of only 300, this set, titled “Portraits of Borzois,” is a sophisticated tribute to the legendary Russian Wolfhound.
The portfolio contains a full set of 28 large-scale lithographs (17.5” x 11.75”), reproduced from the 1870s life sketches of N.A. Martynow. These original drawings were commissioned to document the prize-winning hounds exhibited by the Imperial Society of the Royal Court of Russia under the patronage of the Romanovs. This specific copy is a rare, unnumbered “Out-of-Series” or Publisher’s Copy, likely reserved for the original production team.
Accompanying the lithographs is the scholarly essay “Echoes of Old Russia” by Alexander Sushko, Ph.D., and a complete “Key to the Contents” identifying each dog by name and its noble owner.
The entire portfolio is in excellent condition. The lithographs are crisp with only minor age-toning to the edges. The original folder shows light wear commensurate with age, adding to its authentic character.
This collection offers a rare opportunity to own a complete “instant gallery” of canine art, perfect for a grand library, entry hall, or any traditional living or dining room. Please note that the gallery of prints shows one close up print of one dog to provide an example of the exquisite detailing of each of the 28 dogs.
