This antique, Conte & Boehme, porcelain, trinket dish is in the shape of an adorable dog in a rowboat. Called a “fairing”, they were quite popular between 1860 – 1914, where they were given away as prizes at country fairs throughout England. As with many of the Conta & Boehme fairings, this one is part matte porcelain (the dog and the base of the boat) and part glazed porcelain (the top half of the boat and its interior.) The numbers “3718P” and “166” are impressed on the bottom of the rowboat. It measures 2 1/4″ tall x 5″ long x 2 1/4″ wide. Despite some wearing off of the red paint along the boat’s edge, and the gold painted stripe just underneath it, it is still in wonderful condition, and ready to be displayed or put to good use as a place to hold jewelry on a vanity, or stamps/paper clips on a desk.
This small, but extraordinary trinket dish is an absolute treasure, an outstanding addition to any fairing collection, and a tribute to the charismatic character of our canine counterparts.
