This very unique, German, porcelain match holder was made and hand painted in Germany. It features a highly-detailed dog that looks to be either an Akita, or a Shepherd, dressed in a young boy’s white dress shirt with blue trim and buttons. He sits on a cushioned platform, with his front paws crossed on the top edge of a barrel, which serves as the match holder. This wonderfully engaging porcelain piece is 4 1/4″ tall x 3 1/2″ long x 2″ wide and it is in excellent condition. It is marked “KPM” on the underside, but it is not KPM-Berlin, but rather the A. W. FR. Kister factory of Thuringia, Germany, and the blue mark places its manufacture between 1887 – 1905. This elegant piece has tremendous charm and can certainly be re-purposed for use on a vanity table, or on a formal writing desk. As a collector’s piece, it is certainly a rare and beautiful find.
