The American painter, McClelland Barclay, well-known for his pin-up and military paintings and posters, and the famous “Gibson Girl” used in advertisements, set up a company in the 1930’s to reproduce jewelry and fabricate decorative desk accessories. This fabulous letter opener was one of his creations. The blade, which is a full 8″ long is made of brass and carries McClelland’s name and copyright mark on the underside. The Scottish Terrier dog is cast metal and coated in a brass-colored finish. He stands alert at one end at 2″ tall x 2″ long x 1″ wide. This piece is in good condition with some paint wear on the Scottie, and the tip of the blade is slightly bent and scratched. It still functions perfectly however. This is not only a terrific addition to a Scottie or vintage desk accessory collection, but it is also a wonderful piece of history!
