These antique Pug pounce pots are truly a unique find.
They are a companion pair of pug dogs, that are almost exactly the same, but not quite.
They are exactly the same size, with the same details, but one dog has his head turned and he is gazing slightly to the left.
They look wonderful, together, that way. Each one seems to have a unique personality.
Over the years, however, their heads, that would have been removable to fill their bodies with pounce (fine sand), have fused tightly closed.
One pug dog was looking straight ahead when that happened, and the other pug dog’s head was slightly turned.
The effect is both whimsical and fascinating.
Pounce pots were popular during the Victorian era as a decorative piece, placed on a writing desk, and meant to hold fine sand called “pounce.”
It was sprinkled over a sheet of writing to dry the ink.
These wonderful Pugs were made of pewter, and they have two-toned glass eyes.
These antique pounce pots each measure 3 3/4″ tall x 4″ long x 1 3/4″ wide.
Each pug has seven holes pierced into the top of his head.
They are in wonderful, antique condition, and although they cannot be used as they were originally intended, they, especially as a companion pair, make a very unique and special
decorative addition to any home or office desk.
