Engaging Antique and Vintage Dogs

Engaging Antique and Vintage Dogs

Unlike other forms of collectibles, antique and vintage dogs have a unique “magic” that draws us close, and a special “engagement” that locks us in.

All of us who have been collecting antique and vintage dogs for years, can remember that thing that got us started.

It could have been the particular love of a breed, or fond memories of a much-loved pet. It could have been the sudden inheritance of boxes of Bulldogs from your great aunt Betty.  Or, it was that one collectible canine that you happened upon at a flea market, and just couldn’t walk away from.

Let’s talk about that one…

It’s the one that you still point to first when you are showing off your collection. It’s the one you can’t walk by without giving it a quick glance or a gentle touch. It’s the one who sits on your desk or vanity that patiently listens to a one-way conversation. It’s the one you’ve named.

It’s the one that engaged you then, and continues to do so. Just calling it your “favorite” doesn’t really give it the distinction that it deserves. I think you know what I mean. That chemistry, between you and that dog figurine, isn’t defined by rarity or collectability. Like most “engagements” it resides solely in the heart.

Masters of Engagement

Rosenthal, Dahl Jensen and Karl Ens are just a few of the great modelers that create extraordinarily engaging dog figurines. Take a look at these wonderfully engaging dogs, and see if any of them “speak” to you!

An Engaging Dog’s Tale

In this tale, this gorgeous figurine of a mated pair of Borzois was purchased by Debra from “A Dog’s Tale.” It was made in France by Charles Lemanceau in the 1930’s.

Debra told us:

“I have been owned by borzoi for 30 years, and this statue captures their essence of grace and gentleness.  They are loving, and do better in pairs. I love how the artist depicts the sweet look of their faces that is so spot on!  And of course, they had to be on an Art Deco cabinet!!”

Thank you, Debra, for sharing your story. We are so glad that this “engaging” pair of Borzois found a wonderful home with you!Don’t forget to notice the ingenious positioning of this very large dog figurine in front of a mirror, where it is then easy to see and to admire both sides.

For anyone interested in owning a piece by this artist, we do have one other one in the shop. Click on the picture to learn more.
