This wonderful, German, porcelain candle and match holder was made and hand painted in Germany. It features a highly-detailed dog that looks to be a Poodle, wearing a ribbon collar with a large bow. He is standing on his hind legs, holding a decorative “pot”, that we believe was to be used as a candle holder. At his rear paws sits a large “egg-shaped” basket, which is also decorated with blue. This basket has a very textured design on it which was designed to be used as a striker. This wonderfully engaging porcelain piece is 4 1/4″ tall x 4″ long x 2″ wide and it is in excellent condition. It does have two tiny black spots on the side of the basket that look like were caused during the manufacture of the piece. It shows only the remnant of the blue”KPM” on the underside, but it is not KPM-Berlin, but rather the A. W. FR. Kister factory of Thuringia, Germany. It also has four numbers incised on the underside that are difficult to read.
This elegant piece has tremendous charm and can certainly be re-purposed for other creative uses. As a collector’s piece, it is certainly a rare and beautiful find.
