Darling Dachshund Collectibles
Dachshund Collectibles are some of best antique and vintage dogs you’ll find!
Here at “A Dog’s Tale”, we are surrounded by fabulous dogs of all breeds, shapes, colors and sizes, portrayed in porcelain, paint, bronze, wood, glass, jewelry, the list goes on and on…
Most of us had breed favorites when we started collecting. Dachshund Collectibles are at the top of the list.
Now, after having been exposed to so many dogs, we can each say, unequivocally, that we are dog lovers, pure and simple. Each breed fascinates us and invites us to enjoy those things that make them unique.
It has become one of the very best “perks” of the job.
With that said, I am going to devote this piece to an adorable, goofy, yet loyal and territorial dog…the Dachshund.
Most everyone has had some experience with this dog that is often described as “a half-a-dog high and a dog-and-a-half long.” What you may not know is that “Dachshund” means “badger dog” in German, which is the animal that they were bred to hunt.
You may also enjoy knowing that the dog came before the “hotdog.” The original name for a hotdog was the “Dachshund sausage.”
The Dachshund was also the first Olympic mascot in the 1972 Munich Olympic Games, and that dog’s name was “Waldi.” The first cloned dog in Britain was a Dachshund named “Winnie.”
I could go on listing many more interesting Dachshund facts, but those of you who are already Dachshund enthusiasts already know these things.
More Dachshunds, More Collecting
Dachshund collectibles, as with the wonderful “flesh & fur” counterparts that they portray, come in many shapes and sizes. Smooth-haired, wire-haired and long-haired dogs can be found in bronze, porcelain, glass, wood, and jewelry. As with most dog collectibles, the finer the medium, the more intricate and realistic the dog appears. Our long-haired Dachshund by Karl Ens and our trio of Dachshunds by Rosenthal are good examples of that.
That doesn’t mean, however, that collecting porcelain instead of ceramic, or fine art instead of whimsical caricatures makes one a more “valuable” Dachshund collectible than another. What matters in collecting is the feeling you get from the piece, and how creative you are in making it part of your collection. Some of the least expensive canine collections are the most extraordinary. They may be colorful, like many of the chalkware dogs or whimsical, like a teapot, or sleek and mid-century modern like those done by Haeger.
Once you connect with the breed, collecting becomes an amazing adventure. It is a way of energizing your brain as well as your heart. The more breeds that you connect with, the more interesting that adventure becomes.

Let me entertain all our customers with this wonderful quote about Dachshunds by Mary Doria Russell, an American novelist:
“The Dachshund is a perfectly engineered dog. It is precisely long enough for a single standard stroke of the back, but you aren’t paying for any superfluous leg.”
With a smile and a chuckle, I present just a few of our amazing Dachshunds…
